Rapid advances in microprocessor performance leave little doubt that it will be feasible to build Tflops (teraflops) supercomputers soon, perhaps within a year. Plans are developing to build 10-Tflops and even 100-Tflops machines. As an example of current progress, Digital Equipment Corporation is already selling 600 Mflops (megaflops) processors for its advanced workstations, and commodity Gflops (gigaflops) processors are expected to be available within 1996. A 1000 node massively parallel processor (MPP) system constructed from such processors would in principle provide a Tflops capability.
